If you enjoying shopping, then you are going to love online shopping. Although you do not get the touch and feel of the product before purchase, you are going to have all the time to search and look at all the different products, offers, discounts and promotions without having to walk and walk until you are tired out. All these can be done at the comfort of your home. Online shopping gives you access to products, services and deals that might otherwise not be available to you.
There are obviously many advantages to online shopping, hence the popularity and growth in the market for many sellers to bring their products to you online. But this also attracts unscrupulous people who will try to take advantage of the unwary shoppers. Hence, it is very crucial to take necessary actions to safeguard yourself.
Here are a few tips for you to lookout for while shopping online:
a. Good security software for your computer
Invest in a good malware or security protection software like McAfee LiveSafe to prevent someone from stealing your identity and personal data. Make sure the security software is installed in all your devices including your mobile phone and tablets.
Ensure that your security software is updated all the time as new viruses are introduced all the time. Even the old existing ones mutate constantly and you need to be sure that you are not vulnerable.
At times you might even have to use a second spyware software to detect any other attacks that may have slipped through your first security system. You can never be too careful on this. And as a general thumb of rule, never open any emails or links that seems strange even if it is from your good friend. Remember, they could have been hacked and they would not be aware that they are sending out those harmful emails to you.
b. Use credit cards instead of debit cards
It is preferred for you to use credit card or payment methods like Paypal to secure your purchases. Avoid debit cards as direct charges are made to your bank and you cannot raise any dispute on the purchase. With credit cards, you can always lodge a report and hold the payment and a check can be done if there is any dispute. This is the same with Paypal although Paypal can be tricky at times.
If you are purchasing intangible products, then it is very likely that you may not get any refund from Paypal especially if the seller disagrees with your request for refund.
c. Terms of purchase
Check the terms of purchase before you click to buy. Check if shipping is included, if not, how much it costs. Check if there are refunds and what is the return policy. Make sure you read in between the lines to ensure that there is no last minute surprise.
d. Where to make your online purchase
If possible try to make all your online purchase from a safe computer. Avoid public computers at internet cafes. Where it is not possible, remember to always log off your sessions properly and do not ever ask the browser to remember your password on a public computer. On many occasions I have seen people leaving their email passwords or skype passwords on the public computer and when I logon to the computer, I see all the chats and emails of the previous person. And if I am a hacker, I would be able to get all their personal data.
If you take all these precautions, there is no reason why you should not enjoy shopping online.
