In our case and in today’s day and age, it is no longer the necessity but the ongoing trends which are actually the grandmothers for all inventions. I mean, c’mon, #selfie is not a necessity nor is keeping your speaker 10000 ft away from your device.
The Selfie Stick – Also known as the ‘Narcissistick’ this handy device helps in clicking selfies. When mobile phones were invented, every concert looked ethereal thanks to the glow of the phones being waved in the same direction with military precision during a particularly deep, slow rock song. Now a days all concerts, festivals, a gathering, a walk in the park and shopping at the mall look as if the confederation of fencing has come together to fight for their rights. Here is a fun fact – the selfie stick was invented by the Japanese in the 90’s and promptly landed in the ‘Useless Japanese Inventions’ book, before gaining its well deserved popularity in the latter half of 2014.
Bluetooth Speaker – Did you know the term ‘Bluetooth’ has been taken from the name of a 10th Century king Harald Bluetooth? The logo is nothing but the king’s initials taken from ancient runes. Bluetooth was invented in 1998 and was primarily used for mobile phones to communicate with computers. The first ten years were spent in making enabled TVs, watches and even medical equipment. Then in 2008, the first ever enabled music system was invented. Now days the speakers grow smaller and the distance between the device and the speaker grow larger, quite literally. No longer does one have to stand next to the speaker with a computer screen or a phone attached to it via an aux (it is no longer the Stone Age, people!) to change the embarrassing One Direction song which suddenly came on and you had no clue how. With nearly all of the electronic companies coming up with Bluetooth speakers, one is spoilt for choice though there are all kinds which fit all kinds of budget, out there.
Spiderpodium – The latest invention to hold your umpteen gadgets, the Spiderpodium comes in three basic colours as of now – White, grey and black. We tend to get suspicious of products when they say ‘universal’ in their descriptions, but Spiderpodium is just that – a universal stand. It is shaped like a spider and its eight spindly legs can be bent in any way and have a surprisingly firm grip on your tablet/ phone. Two sizes are currently available (larger one is for the tablets and the smaller one is for phones) and it has already gotten rave reviews. Use it on the bag strap, on a bike, in the car, hang it from the back of a chair, etc. this makes for a cute accessory. Also, the day you are bored at work, try making funny structures out of it for self amusement. Arachnophobes might have a tough time dealing with this particular product though.
We cannot imagine our lives without such inventions and usually tend to forget about the umpteen generations which have survived without the need to click a selfie and then post it on Twitter immediately or have had the need to hang their gadgets a few feet away and listened to music or watched a prank video. With a new day bringing in more and more products, we cannot wait for the day when we finally come across the wackiest of inventions.
